DIY Ruler Table Runner

I had been searching for a simple table runner when I came across the idea of turning one into an oversized ruler. I loved the vintage schoolhouse look and realized it would be an easy project to recreate myself.

With a plain table runner, a fabric marker, and a little measuring, I made my own DIY ruler table runner—and it ended up being a surprisingly simple project.

I immediately loved the oversized ruler look and thought it would be perfect for our dining room. Since our dining table also doubles as one of our homeschool spaces, the vintage schoolhouse feel seemed especially fitting.

I originally came across the idea through an old Country Living DIY and decided to create my own version. It turned out to be a simple project, so I’m sharing how I made it below.

Materials

  • Light khaki or natural-colored table runner
  • Iron
  • Yardstick
  • Measuring tape (optional)
  • Fabric marker
  • Pencil

Directions

1. Iron out any creases.

2. Using the a pencil first and a measuring tape, mark every 1 1/2 inches. That will make a total of seven marks within every foot.

3. The length of the seven marks within each foot measures 1″, 2″, 1″, 2.5″, 1″, 2″, 1″. Each foot mark goes all the way across the runner. Using a yard stick makes this part a lot easier and your line to come out straighter.

4. Once all the markings are completed, go back everything with the fabric marker. For the seven marks between each feet I used the fine point side of the fabric marker and the thicker brush tip for the foot marks.

5.  Now time for the numbers. I printed the number out on to cardstock paper using Cambria font at font size 500. Cut the numbers and use as a stencil to trace onto the table runner.

6. Color in the numbers using the fabric markers, and you are done! Enjoy your new ruler table runner.

Here’s how the finished ruler table runner looked styled with some fall décor. I love how it turned out! The vintage ruler design added just the right amount of character without making the table feel too busy.

I hope this DIY ruler table runner inspires you to try making your own. It’s a simple project that adds a fun vintage schoolhouse touch to a table, and it can easily be customized to fit the size and style of your space.
